A while back we came across these slightly disturbing mugshots from the 40’s and 50’s - the subjects crimes are not noted although this ambiguity only seems to add to the drama and realism.

If you’re into the whole bike thing then you’ll love Tokyobike - They’re a small, independent bicycle company founded in 2002 in the quiet Tokyo suburb of Yanaka - the name was derived from the design of the bikes, in the same way the mountain bike was designed for the mountains so Tokyobike was designed for Tokyo - sweet - they’re also in London + Berlin - nice id too (via HUH magazine)

We met up with Larry and Dan at the Glasgow Press this morning. They are what you might call an endangered species. They practice the craft of Letterpress, surrounded by their beautifully antiquated Heidelberg presses. Each of these repetitively whoosh and groan as they go about their assigned tasks. These presses are the last of their kind. As Larry says ‘Once they’re gone they’re gone’. The same can be said of the knowledge and craftsmanship that is required to produce letterpress printing.

Having said this there is a fast growing demand for Letterpress and indeed other forms of the more ‘traditional’ printing techniques. (Glasgow Press’ full schedule is proof of this). The niche has become a point of differentiation. An emotive and nostalgic alternative to the digital norm. Something designers commission when they want to create a lasting impression.

We’d like to thank Dan and Larry for taking the time to show us around their print studio. It was great to get out of our sterile studio environment and see design in action, at the coal-face so to speak. I came across this illustration of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick a few days back - I love the scale, it’s intricate elements and when you step back, the huge black and white shapes. They were created by Tom Neely, a painter and cartoonist living in Los Angeles. His art has been featured in galleries in San Francisco and Los Angeles, in dozens of magazines and literary journals and on album Covers.
